Gas Boiler Makes a Loud Bang / Mini-Explosion When Igniting or Whistles Like a Kettle
You open the hot water tap, wait four seconds in silence, and suddenly the boiler ignites with a loud 'BANG!' that rattles the metal casing. Or after ten minutes of heating, it starts whistling like a boiling kettle. These noises are urgent early warnings of internal component failure.
1. Loud Bang on Startup (Delayed / Explosive Ignition)
When the ignition electrode is coated in carbon soot or bent out of alignment, the spark is delayed by 3–4 seconds while gas continues entering the combustion chamber. When the spark finally jumps, it ignites the accumulated pocket of gas all at once, causing a mini-explosion that can crack the burner and flue seals.
2. High-Pitched Kettle Whistling (Boiler Kettling)
When limescale and magnetite sludge restrict water flow inside the primary heat exchanger, trapped water boils into high-pressure steam bubbles, producing a loud whistling or knocking sound.

Is it safe to keep using a boiler that bangs when igniting?
No. Repeated explosive ignitions can damage the sealed combustion chamber and allow flue gases (carbon monoxide) to leak indoors. Turn it off and have the electrodes serviced.
