Osona Plumbing Guide: How to Protect Pipes and Boilers from Severe Frost in Vic
In the Osona region, thermal inversion across the Plana de Vic and freezing nights near Montseny (Seva, El Muntanyà) or Vall del Ges (Torelló) subject water lines to sub-zero temperatures down to -7 °C. In local trade practice, frozen water inside copper or polyethylene pipes is the leading cause of sudden ruptures and severe flooding during daytime thawing.
Why the Plana de Vic is a high-risk zone for pipes in winter
Persistent fog throughout December to February traps freezing air in low-lying plains. Water standing inside exposed pipes expands by 9% in volume when freezing, exerting over 2,000 bars of hydraulic pressure that splits thick copper pipes.
Frequently, leaks remain hidden while temperatures stay below freezing because the ice plug seals the rupture. The flood occurs around midday when sunshine thaws the ice and pressurized water rushes through the split.
Safe progressive thawing methods and what to avoid
Immediately shut off the main water isolation valve before attempting anything. If a split has formed beneath the ice, thawing without shutting the mains will instantly flood the property.
Apply progressive, gentle heat using a hairdryer or warm damp towels wrapped around the exposed pipe, starting from the faucet end towards the frozen segment. Never use open-flame blowtorches due to extreme fire hazards and thermal shock.
