Accidentally Drilled Into a Water Pipe or Electrical Cable: Emergency Guide
You are hanging a bathroom mirror, TV bracket or kitchen shelf when the drill bit punches into something hidden inside the wall: either pressurized water starts spraying out of the hole, or there is a loud bang and the house goes dark. Stay calm and follow these immediate steps.
Scenario 1: You Drilled Into a Water Pipe
1. Turn off the main water stopcock (llave de paso general) immediately, or close the room isolation valves.
2. Open the lowest cold and hot taps in the property to drain residual pressure from the pipework.
3. If the water coming out is warm, dark or smells metallic and does not stop when you close the main stopcock, you have punctured a closed-loop central heating pipe. Turn off the boiler and release pressure via a radiator bleed valve.
4. Never rely on a plastic wall plug and silicone to 'plug' a punctured pipe: domestic water pressure sits between 3 and 5 bar and will blow the plug out at night, flooding the wall. A plumber must expose a small section of pipe and solder a copper coupling or press-fit a multilayer sleeve.
Scenario 2: You Drilled Into an Electrical Cable
1. Let go of the drill holding only its insulated plastic grip—never touch the metal chuck or drill bit.
2. Verify at the consumer unit that the breaker and RCD for that circuit are switched OFF.
3. Never pull the drill bit out and flip the breaker back on just because 'it stays up': the bit has stripped the PVC insulation, leaving Live, Neutral and Earth millimetres apart inside damp plaster, which can electrify the wall or start a hidden fire.
