Why the RCD Breaker Trips When It Rains and How to Restore Power
A heavy rainstorm hits and suddenly your entire home goes dark. You walk over to the consumer unit (fuse box), try to flip the main RCD (diferencial) back up, and it snaps straight back down, leaving your fridge off in the middle of the storm. Here is why rainwater causes earth leakage and how to isolate the affected circuit.
Why Rainwater Trips the RCD (Interruptor Diferencial)
Unlike individual miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) that trip due to overload or dead short circuits, the RCD constantly monitors whether the current flowing in through the Live wire matches the current returning through the Neutral wire.
Rainwater mixed with facade dust or garden soil is highly conductive. As soon as a few drops enter an outdoor light fitting, terrace socket, awning motor or cracked junction box, current leaks into the damp wall or Earth wire. Once leakage exceeds 30mA, the RCD cuts all power to prevent electrocution.

Emergency Steps to Keep Your Fridge and Indoor Lights Running
1. Flip all the small circuit breakers (MCBs) down, then push the main RCD switch up.
2. Flip the small breakers back up one by one. If you have a dedicated 'Terrace', 'Garden' or 'AC' breaker that trips the RCD, leave that single breaker down and enjoy power in the rest of the house.
3. If the terrace light shares the main indoor circuit and water is bridging Neutral and Earth inside the wet fixture, the RCD will trip even with the wall switch turned off, because a standard wall switch only disconnects the Live wire.

Why does the RCD trip even when the outdoor light switch is turned off?
Standard wall switches only interrupt the Live wire; the Neutral wire remains continuously connected to the consumer unit. If rainwater touches both the Neutral terminal and the Earth wire inside the outdoor lamp, the RCD will trip immediately.
