Differential Switch (RCD)
Breaker that detects ground leaks and disconnects the power to prevent electrocution.
What is Differential Switch (RCD)?
The differential switch (or residual current device - RCD) is an automatic breaker that measures the difference between the incoming and outgoing current of a circuit. If there is a difference, it means part of it is leaking (typically to the ground, or through a human body if someone touches a bare wire) and disconnects automatically in 30ms.
When you encounter it in an emergency & typical cost
Trips repeatedly = there is an appliance with insulation leakage, or moisture in the installation. Living with a bypassed RCD is dangerous and illegal. Replacement: €80-150.
